The briefing

This course is in partnership with McCarthy Counseling and Consulting, LLC.

This is a course for firearms instructors/coaches in creating a trauma-informed environment on the range.
But what does being "trauma-informed" actually mean in the context of firearms training?
What is does NOT mean:
-lowering standards
-allowing unsafe behavior
-avoiding difficult topics
-treating every student as traumatized
-becoming someone's therapist
-excusing inappropriate behavior
What it DOES mean:
- understanding how trauma can affect behavior, attention, learning and decision-making
-Recognizing that students may have very different responses to the same training environment
-providing predictability, choice, transparency, and appropriate boundaries
-avoiding unnecessary power struggles and humiliation
-knowing when you're outside your role

Many of our students seek firearms education as a result of experiencing trauma. Because of this, it is our responsibility as instructors/coaches to approach instruction with a trauma-informed mindset. What does it mean to be trauma-informed? It involves recognizing the impact of trauma and providing coaching that is empathetic, responsive, and aimed at preventing re-traumatization. In this course, you will learn how to apply trauma-informed principles specifically within a firearms training environment from a licensed mental health professional and firearms instructor/coach.

This course has a hard cap of 10 participants to allow for meaningful discussion. If the course is full, you may request to be put on the waiting list.

Held virtually over Zoom. Link and additional information will be sent via email the week of the class
